Robin Ventura is a retired American baseball player who played in the Major Leagues from 1989 to 2004. He was primarily a third baseman, but also played at first base and designated hitter during his career. Ventura was born on July 14, 1967 in Santa Maria, California. He attended college at Oklahoma State University and played baseball for the Cowboys. In 1988, he was a member of the United States Olympic baseball team that won the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. After the Olympics, Ventura was drafted by the Chicago White Sox with the 10th overall pick in the 1988 Major League Baseball draft. He made his Major League debut in September 1989 and quickly became a fixture in the White Sox lineup. He was known for his excellent defense at third base and his ability to hit for power and average. Ventura played for the White Sox for 10 seasons and was named to the American League All-Star team twice. He also won five Gold Glove Awards for his defense at third base. In 1999, he was traded to the New York Mets, where he played for four seasons. He then played one season each for the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers before retiring after the 2004 season. In his career, Ventura hit .267 with 294 home runs and 1,182 runs batted in. He was also known for his sportsmanship and his ability to play through injuries. In 2016, he was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame for his achievements at Oklahoma State University.
